Norwegian designer Andreas Melbostad has launched a label under his own name after years spent at a raft of major brands, with the new limited-edition unisex offer available exclusively via his webstore melbostad.com.

The Royal College of Art-trained creative has had an impressive career over several decades, working in increasingly senior positions with Alber Elbaz at Guy Laroche and Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, Susan Dell’s Phi, Roberto Cavalli, and Diesel Black Gold. At the latter he added menswear to his remit as well as his womenswear speciality. And he opened his fashion design consultancy Andreas Melbostad LLC in 2010 and has also worked with Zara and Vera Wang.

The designer said he’s taken a “quality-over-quantity” approach for his own label and the product is sourced and produced in Italy “with a strict commitment to sustainable standards, partnering with manufacturers and suppliers with unwavering dedication towards eco-friendly practices”.

Seasonless products are released throughout the year and “shipped direct-to-consumer from the manufacturer, reducing waste and cost while streamlining the process”. The aim is to offer a “unique and carefully crafted product of lasting quality at the best possible value”.

Meanwhile, the design aesthetic is “in keeping with Melbostad’s Norwegian heritage and is built around the brand’s Scandinavian narrative”.

For its very first season, there’s a leather field jacket, a utilitarian jeans jacket, a bomber shirt-jacket, shirt tunics, skirts, hoodies, and T-shirts.

They have a “relaxed oversized silhouette, featuring extra long sleeves and turn-up cuffs”. He also said that “military clothing and workwear pieces inform an overall utilitarian edge”.

Colours are muted and metal hardware details give signature industrial accents, while knit and webbing trims “add texture to a focused range of core materials”.

There’s also a raft of eco-friendly features such as GOTS-certified and ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) fabrics; solvent-free and bio-sourced products from renewable origins used for outerwear; and made-in-Italy leather certified under Leather Working Group standards.

All packaging and tags are also recycled and adhere to a no-excess-packaging philosophy.
