Here’s How to do Maximalist Layering for the End of Winter

Excessive layering in winter is the inevitable truth of the season. Temperatures drop, the chance of freezing precipitation is a constant in the back of our heads, and the sun seemingly hibernates until the beginning of April. It's only expected that you'll be shrouded in clothes until the first signs of spring show themselves. The silver lining? Maximalism is in, and it’s arguably the best aesthetic for these bone-chilling months.

"Maximalist layering is a great way to incorporate seasonal clothing during the winter months," says Sherri McMullen, founder and CEO of luxury retailer McMullen. "You can layer tops under jackets and sweaters" for a look that will ensure warmth, but choosing the unexpected can lead to a more interesting outfit overall. Clothes you'd normally wear in the spring or summer don't have to be overlooked when scanning your closet in the morning. For a maximalist look with summer pieces, McMullen suggests "bibs... under a wrap dress that is a bit more open." With this lavish aesthetic, more is more, and continuously adding on your warm weather favorites can result in a chic, winter-ready ensemble you never would have put together otherwise.
If this sounds like a lot, that's because it is, but don't let the fear of frumpiness stop you from adding on piece after piece. Choosing to withstand the cold for the sake of fashion because you're worried your heavily layered outfit will be all bulk and no shape is your decision to make, but we promise it doesn't have to be that way. It all comes down to the individual pieces with which you begin your look. Even during this time of year, McMullen doesn't shy away from the fitted, sheer section of her closet when figuring out what to wear—pairing lightweight, mesh tops "under jackets or crop sweaters" can help you keep a contoured silhouette as you layer.

With all of this in mind, we hope you feel inspired to experiment with different ways of layering from these four maximalist, street style looks below.

Over the Top

Combine preppy and maximalism with triple the tops for a chic look that will keep you ultra-toasty. A sweater tied around your shoulders is the posh signature, so pare back with a striped button-up and a vibrant vest to make it more casual. You’ll appear elevated and stylish with a relatively simple outfit, but it’ll make them think that you tried more than you (probably) actually did.
