Met Gala impact on search and sales continues weeks after event

The Met Gala of just over two weeks ago may seem like a distant memory, having since been upstaged by that other event in London on Saturday in which famous faces walked the red carpet and dressed up in crazy costumes. But it’s still having an impact on fashion.

New data from resale giant Vestiaire Collective showed that as of Monday this week, global sales of Karl Lagerfeld’s namesake brand were up 48% month on month.
Traffic to the brand has been elevated ever since the event with that 48% spike having also been seen in the days immediately following the Met Gala for which Lagerfeld and his legacy were the theme.
Meanwhile, global sales for Chloé (a brand that Lagerfeld once creatively directed) are running 26% higher (and were up 72% in the immediate aftermath of the event), while Fendi sales are still 6% up, having spiked 35% in the days after the Gala.
It’s interesting too that Miu Miu and Valentino, popular red carpet labels, also seem to have benefited from the Met effect. Miu Miu sales rose 17% in the days after the Gala but are now up 36% month on month.
And Valentino’s global sales rose 15% in the immediate aftermath with global searches for the label now running 23% higher.
It’s particularly interesting that Vestiaire Collective specifically is seeing this activity given its focus on vintage and pre-owned.
Anyone trying to find pieces from Lagerfeld’s own back catalogue is likely to start their search on sites such as this (as well as on eBay and other pre-pwned specialists). In fact, back in January, Vestiaire Collective actually sold the exact Lagerfeld-designed Chloé violin dress that Margaret Zhang wore on the Met red carpet this month.
So chances are that future Met Galas could also see elevated activity on resale sites.
Meanwhile, search facilitator Stylight has also seen search activity taking off not due to the Met Gala red carpet but to its after-parties that endorsed the see-through dress trend.
It had already seen activity rising pre-Gala, and this was boosted by celebs such as Olivia Wilde, Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, Paloma Elsesser, and Kendall Jenner, among others, wearing sheer looks following the main red carpet reveal.

Stylight reported a 110% increase in Google searches for “see through dress trend” in the past month and has seen a 41% increase in demand for mesh clothing on Stylight itself in the past month.
There’s also been a 200% increase in Google searches for “what to wear under a sheer dress?” and a 367% increase in visits to Stylight’s own editorial article called “What to wear under a see-through dress”.
Coming just ahead of the all-important summer holiday season, the impact of all those sheer pieces could be major for those shopping beachwear and seeking nighttime looks for beach vacations.
