Kidswear brand MAI  — which stands for Making Animals Important — has partnered with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust to create a new collection of “ethical and organic” clothing for kids from newborn up to age eight.

The collection features “unique endangered animal designs showcasing the Sumatran orang-utan, ring tailed lemur and the Lesser Antillean iguana”.

Each piece in the collection is made from “the softest certified organic cotton and all packaging is 100% plastic-free”.

The company said that it’s “slow-fashion” range is available on its own webstore and can also be bought in Jersey Zoo gift shops (both at the zoo and Jersey airport) and also on the Durrell.org website, all of which are the kind of locations that should reach parents in tune with MAI’s outlook.

The range features unisex rompers, T-shirts, sweats, and dresses in on-trend soft pastels, khaki’s and cream organic fabrics. Each item features hand-drawn prints to highlight the animals’ stories.

The two-year-old brand was founded by Tina Salt “following a conversation with her four-year-old daughter India-Mai about endangered animals during [a] home-schooling session”.

Salt, who was pregnant at the time, had years of experience as a fashion buyer and “was inspired to follow her dream of launching a responsible and conscious fashion brand”.

Linking with the conservation and animal-advocate Durrell organisation is clearly a good move for the label and Salt said that at launch “this was the type of partnership that I hoped we could make. The more of us who come together working towards helping conservation the better”.

The collection launches this month with retail prices ranging from £22 for a T-shirt to £35 for a dress.
